SWBAT:

  • Identify and describe the tenets of Christianity as practiced in the Roman Empire.

  • Explain why the principals of Christianity were sometimes mistaken by the leaders of Rome and why membership in the sect could be dangerous.

  • Explain Christianity's rise throughout the Roman Empire

Step 1: Mrs. Silver will begin class by directing students to answer the DO NOW on their Cornell Notes. The DO NOW will generate thoughts as to why religion is important to people and can have both positive and negative impacts on a society.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will begin direct instruction via The Rise of Christianity as practiced in the Roman Empire power point. Students will take notes on their Cornell Notes adding information as framed by their notes.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Compare and Contrast: Roman Mythology and Christianity-Roman Empire handout. Students will use their previous notes from Roman mythology and their notes from today to complete the C&C handout. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to work on their own, then she will (once the 10 minutes have passed) let students move to a partner and share what they came up with-using the Think, Pair, Share strategy. Students will be given 10 minutes to share with each other. Once students have had time to share, Mrs. Silver will use the CLASSDOJO to randomly select students to share their thoughts-whole class discussion. Mrs. Silver will ask students to move back to their seats.

Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the handout titled "The Development of Christianity". Students will individually read and use Post-its reading strategy as they read. Once students have finished reading they will answer the following on a separate sheet of paper and turn in at the end of class:
