Do Now: What is the definition of religion? AND Why is it important to show respect for others' beliefs?

Students will engage in a discussion with teacher about the importance of showing respect for others' beliefs. Then teacher will ask students to respond and develop guidelines that will enable the class to study world religions in a respectful way. Teacher will guide student discussions toward not judging the validity of a religion, attempting to understand the ideas presented, and being receptive to interpretations offered.

SWBAT: Analyze and describe the role of religion in Ancient Civilizations and the impacts to today's world.

Lesson for the Day:

Step 1: Students will begin the day with a teacher directed powerpoint. The power point will help students to evaluate the 5 main religions of the world and their importance to past, present, and future civilizations development. The teacher will cover the basic elements via the powerpoint and students will follow taking Cornell Notes with written summary at the end.

Step 2: Teacher will deepen students understanding of each religion by dividing students among 6 stations. The 6 stations will cover: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and a Map Activity of the religions of the world. Students will rotate to each station to read and fill in the corresponding chart with guided questions for each religion. The guiding questions will help students to learn about each of the "World's 5 Main Religions" and provide a written interpretation for the role and impact that each have in past, present, and future civilizations.
