DO NOW - What is a myth and how have they influenced or shaped previous civilizations that we have discussed?
Students will complete a map activity and reading to understand the geographical influence to development of Rome. Students will need to answer questions 1&2 of Geography Skills. Students will gain an understanding of Rome's geographical features and the affects; Features such as climate and physical features can affect the food sources, resources, and the ability of people to travel to and from the region. Geography can therefore affect the occupations, economy, and culture of a given region.
Once students have completed map activity they will be asked to read pages 146 and 147 of the World History Book: "The Land and Peoples of Italy" to help them understand how Rome's central location and geographic features made it a desirable location from which to expand. Students will need to answer Reading Check Question at the bottom of the page.
Once students have completed the reading and question activity, they will engage in a whole group discussion about the answer to their reading check question. They will also participate in a discussion of the Geographic Skills questions 1&2 to discuss the different cultures within Rome and how the Latins conquered each one to gain complete control of the Italian peninsula.
Students will then watch a short video clip that represents a visual interpretation of the creation of Rome: Myth-Romulus and Remus Creation Myth of Rome: Romulus and Remus
After students have watched the short clip teacher will pass out the sequence trip activity and finish the story out as written on the handout. Once teacher has read this aloud, students will then participate in a APPARTS reading strategy to allow students to connect with reading and write individual interpretations. After students have completed their APPARTS sheets they will be divided into groups to complete the Romulus and Remus sequence strip activity.
