Identify and describe the relationship between the Early African Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay
List and describe the political, social, economic and religious systems of the Early African kingdoms.
Analyze primary sources for content and point of view.
Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now - List the first 4-5 words you think of when you think of Africa. Explain each. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Mrs. Silver will use class DOJO to select students randomly.
Step 2: Next, Mrs. Silver will introduce the main "3 Kingdom States of Africa Ghana, Mali, and Songhai" via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell Notes. I will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will finish Cornell Notes by writing a summary at the bottom of the Cornell Notes about the "3 Main Kingdom States of Africa".
Step 3: Students will read about the 3 Kingdom States of Africa-Chapter 7; Section 2, and complete a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer is a "cut down" version of the PERSIAN Chart and will help students to understand the Government, Economy, Important Cities, and Religion for each Kingdom State.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will introduce writing an essay. She will use direct instruction via The Thesis Statement powerpoint. Students will be given a print out of the powerpoint in which they will be able to take notes on an individual, as needed, basis. Mrs. Silver will use the powerpoint to explain that students will be writing a 5 paragraph essay on any topic they would like to write about from a historical perspective. Mrs. Silver will begin with the explanation of what a thesis statement is and why it is the starting point, foundation, for writing a paper. This will be the first step in explaining to students the process in which to write a proper and well written 5 paragraph essay. She will also let students know that they have from now until the end of the semester, with periodic check ins, to write their essay. Mrs. Silver will pass out and explain the Research Paper Organizer and Research Paper Checklist Handout. These two handouts will help students to be able to plan and organize the structure of their paper before they begin the writing process.
