DO NOW - List the first 5 words you think of when you think of Africa. Explain each word.

Teacher will begin lesson by showing the following power point and students will follow taking notes on the Cornell Note taking guide. Teacher will explain how African civilizations developed and great trading states arose. Teacher will explain the geography of Africa and its location in relation to trade. Trade not only resulted in a transfer of ivory, gold, and other valuable resources, but also lent itself to the transfer of knowledge, cultures, religions, languages, and ideas.

Students will then be given 5-8 minute reading sessions on a individual basis to read about each of the Kingdoms and States of Africa (Ghana, Mali, and Songhai). After they have completed reading they will complete the chart that is attached to the "Do Now" power point. The readings are from the Glencoe World History books pages 242-248.

This lesson will continue from today through tomorrow.
