I Want Students:

  1. Know the technological advancements and analyze their efficiency in improving navigation on the high seas and its relevance to the areas explored and claimed.

  2. Understand the motives for exploration and explain the significance of the the 3 G's.

  3. Complete a graphic organizer (Skill) on the various types of trade that emerged because of the Age of Exploration.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What motivates you? What do you want more than anything else in life? Who from our time could be considered an explorer? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to name what they want more than anything else, and link that information in that it gives them motivation. Students should also be able to generate ideas about explorers for our time.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Age of Exploration-3G's via Exploration Prezi. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine the motivations for exploration, which are simplified by learning the 3 G's. Students will also gain insight to the technological advancements that enabled explorers to take on the challenge and uncertainty of sailing to an unknown world. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Once Mrs. Silver has discussed the 3 G's, technological advancements, The Atlantic Slave Trade, and The Columbian Exchange, she will pass out the The Slave Trade Map and Reading Activity. Students will be given 10 minutes to read and analyze the handout. Once 10 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will allow students to partner up and use the Think, Pair, Share strategy for answers. Students will be given 5 minutes to share their answers and thoughts about the reading. After the 5 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will use Class Dojo to randomly select students to share their answers.
