Know the social characteristics of the various Native American Tribes.
Understand the processes that make up the political system of North Americas Indigenous Tribes.
Construct a graphic organizer (Skill) that outlines the various attributes of the major Native American Civilizations.
Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Why is it necessary for people to adapt from one environment to the next? What changes would you need to make if you moved from Asheville to Miami Beach? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to describe how the environment that surrounds them would impact how they live, what they eat, and their day to day life.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Early Americans of North America via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine the development of the Early American Tribes and the resources they used in order to adapt to the environment and survive. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out Pre-Columbian North American Civlizations graphic organizer. She will explain each step to students. Students will find the following information for each of the North American Civilizations that are listed on the graphic organizer. First, Mrs. Silver will tell students that they are to find the geographic location and write that under the name of the civilization. Step 2, they will label, draw and color an example of their dwelling (house). Step 3, students will identify what the political system was an how it was applied to the society. Step 4, students will write, in order, the social structure and define the role of women within each civilization. Step 5, students will analyze and determine the system of trade for each civilization. Step 6, students will write the language that was spoken within each civilization. Mrs. Silver will give students the remainder of class to research and complete their individual graphic organizer.
