SWBAT:

  • Describe Christian humanism and how Desiderius Erasmus paved the way for the Protestant Reformation.

  • Examine and evaluate Martin Luther's new doctrine of salvation and how it resulted in a break from the church and the establishment of Lutheranism

  • Analyze how Calvinism replaced Lutheranism as the most dynamic form of Protestantism.

Lesson for the Day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What does the word reform mean? What do you think it means regarding the church? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to break the word apart to give its meaning, and then apply that to what they have been previously taught about the Catholic Church.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Reformation and Martin Luther via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine the development of the Reformation, how Erasmus paved the way, and Martin Luther challenged the church and created a new denomination; which in turn established several more. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses. MRS SILVER WILL STOP AT SLIDE 28 FOR THE MARTIN LUTHER 95 THESES PRIMARY DOCUMENT ANALYSIS.

Step 3: Once Mrs. Silver has discussed the development, impact, and movement of the Reformation, she will pass out the handout Martin Luther's 95 Theses. Students will be given 15 minutes to read, individually, each of the pre-selected Theses and rewrite the number in their own words. Next, Mrs. Silver will instruct students that they will have 10 minutes to answer questions 1-8 individually. Once 10 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will allow students to partner up and use the Think, Pair, Share strategy for answers. Students will be given 5 minutes to share their answers and thoughts about the 95 Theses. After the 5 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will use Class Dojo to randomly select students to share their answers.
