Explain how the Black death arrived in Europe, the symptoms, and the impact on European society
Discuss the significance of the Black Death as a turning point in history.
Construct a Black Death poster (STANDARD CLASSES) or newspaper (HONORS CLASSES) informing the citizens about the catastrophic event that claimed millions of lives.
Lesson for the Day:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Is there any action or event that could make you question your faith? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to describe moments that would cause questioning to take place and its impact.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Black Death via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to explain causes and effects of the Black Death, as well as its significance to Europe and history. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Mrs. Silver will also show the next power point, but students will not take notes. They will only listen and follow along as Mrs. Silver goes over the 3 main types of the Black Plague. At the end of the power point Mrs. Silver will explain the effect the Black Plague had on the social structure of Europe.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the reading The Black Death-A Description of the Plague to students. Mrs. Silver will give students 20 minutes to read and use the post-it reading strategy. Once students have been given 20 minutes to read the selection the whole class will have a discussion about the reading . Students will discuss their individual highlights from the reading passage as a whole class.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will explain that students will be constructing a newspaper for the Black Death. She will pass out the Black Death Newspaper project rubric handout. Then she will read the requirements, for the project, to students and ask if they have any questions before they begin. Students will be given the rest of class to work on their newspaper and will need to finish at home for homework.
