Identify the social contract and the social order of Medieval Europe.
Examine how the system of feudalism benefited both lords and peasants.
Understand the difference between feudalism and manorialism.
Lesson for the Day:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Imagine that all of the schools, colleges, libraries, and computers were destroyed. Now imagine all the teachers and doctors quit because no one was paying them. What would YOUR world be like? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to describe a world without the above and the impact it would directly have on them.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Feudalism via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine similarities and differences with the feudal structure as compared with previous social structures. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Once Mrs. Silver has discussed the development and implementation of the feudal structure with students, she will pass out the handout Pyramid of Power in Medieval Times Worksheet. Students will move to a partner to complete/fill in the Feudal structure. After 5 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will use Class Dojo to randomly select students to share their answers. Next, Mrs Silver will instruct students to turn their paper over to the backside titled Find the Main Idea-The Magna Carta. Students will be given 5 minutes to read and post-it on an individual basis. Once the 5 minutes are up, Mrs. Silver will give students the opportunity to share their thoughts and answers to the questions. Students will be participating in the Think, Pair, Share reading strategy.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out King John and His Crowns handout. She will explain that they will participate in an activity that will help to determine their ability to rule and whether or not they would have ruled similar, different, or blended. This activity will help students to understand the complexity of being a ruler and the obligations that they are held to as rulers. As Mrs. Silver moves through the powerpoint students will engage in the activity using their own handout to mark out their crowns as determined by their answers. At the end of the activity they will be able to compare and contrast their rule with King Johns.
