I Want Students:

  1. Know the political, social, and religious relationship of the Scientific Revolution to the Enlightenment.

  2. Understand and explain the impact of contributions made by enlightenment leaders to the Scientific Revolution.

  3. Analyze readings (Skill) and define the concepts showing relationships between the government and the state of nature and the government and the people.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Write down what you know about the Enlightenment. with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students may have a hard time recalling information from their 7th grade year to answer this question, but will be able to add to their answer once we go over it as a class.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Enlightenment via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine why people began to question why they needed government, what the ideal government would be, and what government would work best for society. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Why Government handout. She will explain that students will need to read and use the post-it reading strategy as they read through the selection. Mrs. Silver will give students 20 minutes to complete the reading. Once 20 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will ask students to look over and answer as many of the accompanying questions as they can in a 10 minute time period. Next, she will ask students to get with their 2 Slice Pizza partners to complete the question sections of the handout. Students will use the Think, Pair, Share for this part of the reading.

Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Enlightenment DBQ. Students will need to read each passage, post-it, and answer the corresponding questions. Students will work on this for the remainder of the class, but will complete this assignment for homework.
