Lesson for theday:
Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Do you think there is a good reason for one country to take control of another country? If so, under what circumstances do you think that would be justified? Explain your answer whether it was yes or no... with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to generate ideas for issues that would make them willing to take a stand against government and what that would entail.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Colonial History of Southeast Asia via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes filling in information in blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will gain an understanding that European Imperialism is the next link as the World works toward the inevitability of the Great War. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will display Imperialism in Southeast Asia, 1900 map. Students will be given their own copy of the map in which they will answer questions 1 & 2 at the bottom of the page. We will discuss the questions as a whole class once students have been given 5 minutes to view and answer on an individual basis. Then, she will move on to the political cartoon-The New Imperialism. Mrs. Silver will instruct students to turn to the back side of the paper to answer questions 1&2 on the side. We will discuss the questions as a whole class once students have been given 5 minutes to view and answer on an individual basis.
Step4: Last, Mrs. Silver will pass out Imperialism in Africa Mini DBQ. Students will have the remainder of class to work on reading What Was the Driving Force Behind European Imperialism in Africa? Students will use the post-it method to read the document. Mrs. Silver will ask students questions about the reading to check their level of understanding. She will use Classdojo to randomly select students to answer the questions. Once the reading has been discussed, students will move to the next page to read and answer questions about - Is Imperialism Ever Justified? We will discuss whole class the responses that students have generated. Students will ONLY COMPLETE THE Hook Exercise: Is Imperialism Ever Justified?, What Was The Driving Force Behind European Imperialism? - Students will read and post it the reading then answer the background essay questions. We will work on Documents A, C, D, E, and F tomorrow during the first part of class.
