I Want Students:

  1. Know how to describe the characteristics of an absolute monarchy.

  2. Understand how to examine and explain the effectiveness of absolute monarchies and how they changed the political landscape of Europe.

  3. Analyze primary documents (Skill) to detect tone, bias, and Point of View of the author.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Who is in the painting? What is in the background? What message does this portrait convey? What is the meaning? with complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to detect meanings(inferred message) from the painting using visual perspective.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Absolutism in Europe via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine the causes and effects of Monarchies adopting the idea of absolutism. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out Absolutism Concepts and Graphic Organizer. She will read the directions aloud to students explaining that they will read each of the concept examples one by one. Students will need to read concept example #1 and then move to the chart and answer the four questions for concept #1. Students will move number by number until they have completed the sheet. Once students have completed the chart, they will move on to the next page filling in the Concept Formation Notes. Students will be able to acknowledge similarities and differences between the different rulers. They will also be able to list the 3 common critical attributes that each ruler demonstrates, and use those to form a definition.

Next, students will share their answers. Mrs. Silver have a whole class discussion and choose students to share their responses to the questions by using ClassDojo to randomly select students.

Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Divine Right Primary Source handout. Students will complete this handout for homework. Students will read and use the APPARTS reading strategy to analyze the primary document. Then they will turn to the back and will determine the term by unscrambling the words using the definition to help them form their answer.
