Understand and explain the theory that Social Darwinism explained the popular belief (since discredited) that Western White Man was superior to People of Color (Savages).
Utilize Blooms Taxonomy (Skill) to develop an understanding of the concepts of higher level comprehension and to learn the features of Darwinism.
Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Why are some people born better or with superior natural abilities than others? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to develop reasons as to why they think some people have "God" given attributes.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Blooms-Classification of Thinking via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. This concept will be new to students, so Mrs. Silver will explain and question students to ensure they have grasped each level before moving to the next slide. At the completion of the presentation students should have a good understanding of all six levels of Bloom. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the definition for Social Darwinism handout. Students will read the definition individually. Mrs. Silver will explain that the definition is to give them a preview to what is going to be taught about Social Darwinism via PowerPoint. Once students have been given 5 minutes to pre-read the definition, Mrs. Silver will move to the PowerPoint that explains the Social Darwinism theory and who developed the idea/philosophy of the theory.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the outline notes for the Social Darwinism PowerPoint. She will explain that students will take quick notes and answer questions within the PowerPoint in the outline sections. Mrs. Silver will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students should be able to determine the analyze the theory, understand how the natural selection theory was developed by Charles Darwin, and how it was applied to society(people). Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 5: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Blooms Chart for Social Darwinism. She will explain how students are to do each section of the chart, applying the theory to construct a response for each number. Mrs. Silver will partner students together to work on the chart. Students will be using the Think, Pair, Share activity to complete the chart. Mrs, Silver will give students 30 minutes to work on and complete the chart. Once students have been given 30 minutes to complete, Mrs. Silver will go over questions as a whole class the last 20 minutes of class. She will use Classdojo to randomly select students for responses to questions.
