I Want Students:

  1. Know the circumstances that brought about revolution in Haiti.

  2. Understand and explain the steps on How to Start a Revolution.

  3. Complete a How to Start a Revolution Storybook (Skills).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What are the steps you would take to start a revolution? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able use background knowledge from the American and French Revolution lessons to list the steps required to start a revolution.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Steps to a Revolution and The Haitian Revolution via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking notes on a timeline writing the main idea of each slide and important notes that reflect the date. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to gain an understanding of the characteristics of a revolution, and how the Enlightenment influenced nations, such as Haiti, to revolt against oppressive regimes. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses. (PowerPoint has 2 embedded links to videos that will need to viewed)

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the rubric for the How to Start a Revolution booklet. She will go over directions, whole class, and explain the process in which to write and construct individual booklets. Mrs. Silver will also show examples of the booklet to help students by giving them a visual interpretation of the project. She will insure that all groups understand exactly how to get started on their storybooks.
