I Want Students:

  1. Know the state of the governments in France and Europe that led to the rise of Napoleon.

  2. Understand and explain how the rise of Napoleon led to the emergence of Nationalism.

  3. Complete a guided reading graphic organizer chronicling the Rise and Fall of Napoleon Bonaparte (Skill).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Explain the phrase as it pertains to the Reign of Terror and the calls from the Directory for Napoleon to restore order in France. "Be careful what you wish for." with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to make connections with occurrences in their own life where they may have been better off before or things did not turn out as they thought/hoped for.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Rise and Fall of Napoleon via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine how Napoleon was able to gain all power in France, return to a restrictive society, and then lose all power; and the effects of those events on France. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Napoleon Bonaparte reading. She will instruct students to read each of the 4 segments and use the post-it reading strategy. Mrs. Silver will display the class clock and give them 12 minutes to read. Once the 12 minutes have passed, students will need to partner up and answer the questions that correspond with the reading. Students will use the Think, Pair, Share strategy for this assignment. Mrs. Silver will give students 15 minutes to complete, then she will go over all the questions, whole class discussion, using ClassDojo to randomly select students.

Step 4: Mrs. Silver will instruct students to remain with their partners and work on their study guide for the Unit 3 test tomorrow.
