I Want Students:

  1. Know the Three Estate System of Pre-Revolutionary France.

  2. Understand and describe causes of a Revolution including inequalities in society, the influence of enlightened ideas, and widespread crisis in a country.

  3. Analyze primary sources and (Skill) examine how the introduction of ideas happens over time and leads to change.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What would compel you to start a revolution? What are the things that truly upset you? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to generate ideas for issues that would make them willing to take a stand against government and what that would entail.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Causes of the French Revolution via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to analyze that causes that lead to the people of France revolting against the monarchy. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out The French Revolution Cause and Effect organizer. She will explain that students will need to use their notes to fill in the 4 main causes of the French Revolution, as it was discussed in class. Mrs. Silver will also explain to students that they will not fill in the summary OR effects sections because we have not yet discussed those in class. She will instruct students that when they finish they need to lock it in their binders to complete in the next 2 days during class. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to fill in the Causes section.

Step 4: Last, Mrs. Silver will pass out Causes of the French Revolution DBQ. Students will have the remainder of class to work on reading and answering the questions that go with each document. Students will need to finish for homework.
