Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-If you could go back and change a decision that you made...what would that be? Why would you change it now? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to connect to the question by recalling a time in which they looked back at a certain event and wished they had of handled it differently...would have, could have, should have. Meaning that hindsight is 20/20 in decision making, but more difficult in the here and now.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The War Begins-WWIIvia PowerPoint using slides 35-82. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will build knowledge for the details of WWII, as well as the entry and role of each participant of the European Theatre. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pause at slide 61 to pass out the Invasion of the USSR reading and questions handout. Students will use the post-it reading strategy as they read through the document. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to read. At the end of 10 minutes, she will partner students to use the Think, Pair, Share. Students will read over questions and answer individually, then will use the last 4 minutes to share their responses with their partner. Mrs. Silver will give students 8 minutes to complete. She will discuss, as a class, the responses to the questions using Classdojo to randomly select students. Once the class has discussed, Mrs. Silver will continue with the power point and students will continue taking notes.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pause at slide 68 and pass out the D-Day Reading and Questions handout. Students will use the post-it reading strategy as they through the document. Then they will use the attached map to help them answer the corresponding questions. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to read and 10 minutes to answer the questions. Once 20 minutes have passed, Mrs. Silver will discuss, as a class, the responses to the questions using Classdojo to randomly select students. Once the class has discussed, Mrs. Silver will continue with the power point and students will continue taking notes. She will stop at slide 82 to conclude the lesson.
