Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-How does geography influence how you interact with your neighbors? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to relate to similar reasons as to how their surroundings impact they way they interact, speak, live, have exposure to, etc.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Geography and Early Greek Civilizationvia PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. Mrs. Silver will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will identify each characteristic that contributed to Greek city-states being so independent and the ways in which they settled. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Geography of Greece vs RVC organizer and compare and contrast handout. She will explain that students will need to write down all the notes for geography of Greece in the first box and that students will need to pick only 1 of the RVCs geography and record that information in the 2nd box. Mrs. Silver will also explain that students will need to then flip the sheet over and fill out the Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two civilizations that they recorded information for. Students will work with partners to complete this activity. Mrs. Silver will give students 15 minutes to complete the activity and then she will collect papers from each student for a grade.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Ancient Greece Map Worksheet handout. Next, she will display the blank map of Greece via the lady bug and Ben-Q projector. Mrs. Silver will direct students to look at the map of Greece to help them locate and label all the numbers and bullets that are in the questions for the worksheet. She will then use classdojo to randomly select students to come to the front. Students will take turns for each question/bullet, locating and labeling the blank map of Greece that is displayed on the projector. We will complete this activity as a whole class, so that students will understand how to locate and label a blank map properly by finding similar features on the fully labeled map. They will use this skill for future map activities.
Step 5: Mrs. Silver will pass out the reading TheMinoan and Mycenaeans. Students will read through the reading using the post-it reading strategy. Mrs. Silver will model this strategy via the ladybug, so that students will understand how to do this for future readings. Once students have read through the reading they will take a quiz via Canvas on the reading. Mrs. Silver will allow students to use their reading for help, but the quiz will be timed and students will be given 2 attempts on this quiz.
