I Want Students:

  1. Know the function of religion in ancient civilizations, and how it governed their day-to-day lives.

  2. Understand and research various characteristics of five major religions.

  3. Complete a World Religions organizer each day (Skill).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What is the definition of religion and why is it important to show respect for others' beliefs? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to generate ideas about what religion is, and that whether they believe in one or not, they wouldn't want to be forced to view the opposite, so respect needs to be adhered to regarding religion.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce World Religions via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. Students will need to take notes for EVERY slide including the slide with the definitions. Mrs. Silver will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will analyze each religion as it is discussed, educating themselves on the similarities and differences within each one. Students will be made aware that respect of another person's religion is the cornerstone of what allows people to live in harmony with different groups. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Major Religions of the World research organizer. She will ONLY pass out page 1 of the organizer. Mrs. Silver will explain that students will have the remainder of class to use their notes and their devices to research the 5 main religions. Students will need to answer each box, for each religion, and have a minimum of 5 bullets for the Main Beliefs and Ideas of each religion.
