I Want Students:

  1. Know the significance of the Code of Hammurabi.

  2. Understand and evaluate the positive and negative effects of the Code of Hammurabi on future civilizations.

  3. Complete a short assessment on the consequences of selected laws in Hammurabi's legal doctrine (Skill).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Why does a society need laws? Describe a World without laws. Once students have completed, we will discuss, as a class, the responses that should have been written. Students should be able to determine that all societies, regardless of where they are located, needs a political structure with laws...otherwise chaos would ensue.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Mesopotamia: The Code of Hammurabi via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will gather information to the inequality and harshness of Hammurabi's Law Code. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out Mesopotamia - Part II The Code of Hammurabi project handout. She will explain that students will follow and complete each number as it is listed. Mrs. Silver will tell them to make sure to individually represent each number and letter on their poster paper. Last, she will show them an example of what the project needs to look like upon completion. (Students can either use the displayed slide 4 to write their name, or the handout with cuneiform, to write their name.) Students will use the remainder of class to complete this activity.
