I Want Students:

  1. Know the similarities and differences between the city-states of Athens and Sparta and explain the contributions of each and how they have influenced our world today.

  2. Understand and explain the cause and effects of both the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars.

  3. Complete an Athenian vs Spartan Day Planner and Venn Diagram (Skill).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-How is your community organized and how does it choose its leaders? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to make connections of the city, county, regional, and state levels, as well as the leaders who are over each section.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Athens vs Sparta via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes filling in information in blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will learn the elements of each component for the government, political, economic, religious, and social aspects and how each contributed and influenced the VERY independent city-states of Greece. Students will be able to analyze the two main city-states of Greece, noting similarities and differences within each. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Athenian vs. Spartan Day Planner packet. She will explain to students that they will read through the document using the post-it reading strategy. Students will be given 20 minutes to read. Once students have been given 15 minutes to read they will then move to their partner to answer the corresponding questions for the Athenian vs Spartan Day Planner. Students will be given 10 minutes to first complete silently and individually. Once students have had 10 minutes to work individually they will share their responses with their partner and then complete the attached Venn Diagram with their partner. Students will be using the Think, Pair Share strategy for this reading. Mrs. Silver will give students 15 minutes to complete the Planner and Venn Diagram. Once the 15 minutes are over, Mrs. Silver will ask students questions about the reading to check their level of understanding. She will use Classdojo to randomly select students to answer the questions. We will discuss whole class the responses that students have generated.
