Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-Would you back up your best friend...even if it meant getting in a fight with someone you had previously been friends with? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to connect to and predict events that would cause them to choose one friend over another, possibly losing another friend in the process.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The M.A.I.N. Causes ofWWI via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will analyze the 4 MAIN Causes of WWI. They will also be able to explain how each cause contributed to WWI, and how they were connected to each other. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the 4 M.A.I.N. Causes of WWI graphic organizer. Students will use the information from the power point and their Cornell Notes to write the definition in the 1st box. Students will also need to draw a picture in the 2nd box that represents each cause.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the WWI Political Cartoon. She will explain that students will need to look at the cartoon, using the information that they just learned from the powerpoint, and answer the corresponding questions. Mrs. Silver will give students 5 minutes to answer the 2 questions individually. Once the 5 minutes have passed, she will use Classdojo to randomly select students for responses. Next, students will partner up to use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to answer Political Cartoon Analysis sheet. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to work on this activity with their partner, then she will go over all the questions, whole class discussion, using ClassDojo to randomly select students.
Step 5: Mrs. Silver will pass out An Act of Terror: The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand reading and questions. Students will use the post-it reading strategy as they read through the document. Once students have read the document they will answer the corresponding questions. Mrs. Silver will give students 20 minutes to read through the document and answer the questions. Once 20 minutes have passed, she will tell students to partner up to use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to share their thoughts about the reading and their responses to the questions. Last, Mrs. Silver will go over all the questions, whole class discussion, using ClassDojo to randomly select students.
