Lesson for theday:
Step1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-1. How have leisure time activities changed over the years? 2. What type of leisure activities do people engage in now? Fifty years ago? 100 years ago? 3. How much time do students spend on leisure activities? How much time did people spend on leisure activities in the early 1900s? with 4-5 complete sentences. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, 4-5 complete sentences that should be written. Students should be able to answer these questions by making connections to their own life experiences.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Growth of the Industrial Revolution via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to sequence the events, inventions, and inventors, as well as compare and contrast the rise of Capitalism vs Socialism. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Compare and Contrast: Adam Smith vs. Karl Marx. She will explain that students will need to read and use the post-it reading strategy as they read through the selection. Mrs. Silver will give students 20 minutes to complete the reading. Once 20 minutes have passed Mrs. Silver will ask students to look over and fill in the compare and contrast chart individually. Next, she will ask students to get with their 2 Slice Pizza partners to complete the compare and contrast chart sections of the handout. Students will use the Think, Pair, Share for this part of the reading. Mrs. Silver will go over the responses for each section using Classdojo to randomly select students.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Capitalism vs.Socialism vs. Communism handout. Students will continue to work with their partners. Mrs. Silver will read the directions and the definitions for Socialism and Communism. Students will work with their partners to decide whether each statement is an example of Capitalism or Communism. Mrs. Silver will take the last 10 minutes of the class to go over the handout as a whole class discussion, using Classdojo to randomly select students for their responses.
