Create a political cartoon critiquing British Imperialism in India and Africa (Skill).
Lesson for theday:
Step 1: Students will begin by pulling out their Imperialism in Africa DBQ. Mrs. Silver will instruct students to turn to the last document. She will review the shortened version of White Man's Burden. Once she has gone over and discussed the document she will pass out the White Man's vs. Brown Man's Burden reading and questions. Students will read the poems and use the post-it method while reading them. Mrs. Silver will give them 20 minutes to get this done. Next, Mrs. Silver will get students to partner and use the Think, Pair, Share activity for the questions-they will be given 10 minutes to complete this activity. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the responses that should have been written. Mrs. Silver will use Classdojo to randomly select students for responses to the questions.
Step 2: Mrs. Silver will tell students that they will write their own versions of a Burden Poem. She will explain that the poem will need to be a personal problem that they have experienced currently, recently, or in the past. Students will use their devices to create and write their poems in Word. Once students have completed their poem they will print out and turn in their individual poems. Mrs. Silver will allow students to use past students poems for examples. Students will need to be creative and write a one page poem.
Step 3: Mrs. Silver will introduce British Imperialism in India via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes in a 2 Column Cause and Effect Chart. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to understand the factors that led the Sepoys to revolt against the British and begin the start of Nationalist movements. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.
Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Ghandi reading and questions handout. She will explain that students will need to read and use the posit-it strategy. Once students have read they will need to answer the questions that correlate with the reading. Students will need to complete this for homework.
