I Want Students:

  1. Know the events that led to the March 1917 and October 1917 Revolutions in Russia.

  2. Understand and explain Tsar Nicholas' decision to enter the War, Kerensky's decision to remain in War, and Lenin's decision to remain in War, and Lenin's decision to leave the War.

  3. Complete guided readings on the consequences of Russia at War (Skill).

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-The doctor tells you that your child is very sick and may not live more than 6 months. What would you do to save your child? What would you stop at? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to reflect upon the question and generate an answer based upon what they would want their parents to do/not do for them if they only had 6 months to live.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce The Russian Revolution via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will gain an understanding of the revolutions that were led by Alexander Kerensky and the Bolshevik Revolution led by Vladimir Lenin. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Chapter 16, Background and Russian Revolution reading and questions packet. Students will read and use the post it reading strategy as they read the selections of Ch. 16. Mrs. Silver will give students 7 minutes to complete each section. Once 7 minutes have passed, Mrs. Silver will use Classdojo to randomly select students to share their responses to the questions. She will continue to do this until all the selections have been read and discussed. This will take the remainder of class to complete.
