I Want Students:

  1. Know the characteristics, the propaganda, and key events of Europe at War.

  2. Understand and describe the events that forced the United States to declare War on Germany.

  3. Read and Analyze (Skill) the Zimmerman Note and the Sinking of the Lusitania, respond to questions, and complete an America at War guided reading assignment.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-What is your breaking point? Is there a point where you would have no choice but to strike back against an enemy? What is the scenario for that to happen to you? with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students will be able to recall events in which they "snapped" or imagine something that would make them. From that occurrence they should be able to give details to include what happened to start, what happened, and the results.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce Europe at War and America Joins Forces via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking guided notes-writing in corresponding words to blanks. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will be able to determine the causes and effects of America entering WWI. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

Step 3: Next, Mrs. Silver will pass out the primary document The Zimmerman Note and The Sinking of the Lusitania. Students will read each document and answer the corresponding questions. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to read and respond to the questions. Once 10 minutes have passed, she will go over students responses using Classdojo to randomly select students to share their answers.

Step 4: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Chapter 19 American Neutrality reading and questions. Students will read and use the post it reading strategy as they read the selections of Ch. 19. Mrs. Silver will give students 7 minutes to complete each section. Once 7 minutes have passed, Mrs. Silver will use Classdojo to randomly select students to share their responses to the questions. She will continue to do this until all the selections have been read and discussed. This will take the remainder of class to complete.
