I Want Students:

  1. Know the perils of Trench Warfare and how it weighs on the minds of the soldiers.

  2. Understand and explain how the modern technology in weapons changed, forever, how wars will be fought.

  3. Complete graphic organizers (Skill) listing, describing, and illustrating the weapons of World War 1 and Trench Warfare.

Lesson for the day:

Step 1: Students will begin by answering the Do Now-1. Imagine the most uncomfortable position you could find yourself in. What would you do to escape? 2. You create video games and your job is to invent the ultimate weapon. Describe your creation. with 4-5 complete sentences for each question. Once students have completed we will discuss, as a class, the complete sentences that should have been written. Students should be able to imagine a position in which they could not tolerate for long periods of time. They should also be able to be creative and think about weapons that have not yet been created that would be effective in a time of war.

Step 2: Mrs. Silver will introduce WWI: Trench Warfare and Technology of War via PowerPoint. Students will follow instruction by taking Cornell notes-writing the main idea for each slide and notes that are the highlights of needed information. She will add verbal details to the power point to give them more background information and context as we move through each slide. Students will build knowledge for the advancements of technology in weaponry. They will also be able to explain how the development of new technology in weapons caused countries to revamp strategies for warfare. Students comprehension of the concept will deepen as it is discussed throughout the presentation as well as student engagement with responses.

start at slide 15

Next, Mrs. Silver will pass out the handout Trench Warfare. Students will create a word web using words that describe trench warfare. Students will use the information they just learned via power point to construct their word web. Mrs. Silver will then direct students to the board, in which she will discuss the weapons of WWI in more detail. Students will follow by filling in the blanks on the handout. Once Mrs. Silver has gone over all the weapons of WWI, she will ask students to look at the bottom of their handout. Mrs. Silver will tell students that they will draw their own Trench Warfare scene on the backside of their handout. All instructions for the trench warfare scene are in full detail at the bottom of the page. Mrs. Silver will give students 45 minutes to complete their scene.

Step 3: Mrs. Silver will pass out the Dulce et Decorum Est (pro patria mori) poem. Students will read and use the post it reading strategy as the read the poem. Mrs. Silver will give students 7 minutes to complete. Once 7 minutes have passed, Mrs. Silver will show a video clip that is a video game reenactment of WWI Trench Warfare. The video will help students to have a visual image of what Trench Warfare was like according to the Primary Source of Wilfred Owen's: Dulce et Decorum Est (pro patria mori). After the video has finished, students will partner up to use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to answer the questions. We will discuss, as a class, the responses to the questions using Classdojo to randomly select students.

Mrs. Silver will give students 5 minutes to answer the 2 questions individually. Once the 5 minutes have passed, she will use Classdojo to randomly select students for responses. Next, students will partner up to use the Think, Pair, Share strategy to answer Political Cartoon Analysis sheet. Mrs. Silver will give students 10 minutes to work on this activity with their partner, then she will go over all the questions, whole class discussion, using ClassDojo to randomly select students.

Step 5: Mrs. Silver will pass out Weapons of WWI definition and illustration handout. Mrs. Silver will explain that students will use their device, notes, textbook, etc... to define the weapons of WWI. They will also draw and color a picture that best represents the definition. Students will complete this as homework.
